The argument offered by this update to Malone's 1979 classic was perhaps insurgent in its earlier incarnation simply Malone Stricklin contend early on that most of what we might identify as American music is rooted in the historical experience of the South Their method is fairly simple in support they offer an organic readable catalog of significant figures trends and styles of Southern music and the located them in within their various various social historical and economic contexts For obvious reasons race is probably the most significant themeMy ualms with their analysis are probably unsurprising coming from a textual critic like me and so most readers will see what I consider flaws to be positives I want than a paragraph about Son House or Little Richard or Gram Parsons I want them to dig into the songs give me examples of the various influences on their music and then explore the conseuences That is I want songs Without them the argument seems ephemeralIn sacrificing that sort of examination however Malone and later Striklin are allowed to approach something with an enormous scope in a manageable way Southern MusicAmerican Music is best used s a sort of primer on American musical culture which will hopefully provoke the reader to explore new music I would no hesitate to assign this to a Southern Studies course for instance as long as I could supplement it with actual music

A fine survey of the cultural history of southern music Southern MusicAmerican Music provides a strong argument for how southern music has influenced the character of national musical making through imagery styles and performers Highlighting the tensions between tradition and innovation that have always been a component of southern music making Malone and Stricklin provide a balanced view of the cultural social and political landscape in which the great diversity of southern music has emerged Nothing here is revolutionary to anyone exposed to the history of American popular music but it is a good overview of the role the south has played in creating uniue culturally relevant sonic expressions
