A nice collection of stories although the title is deceptive Yes there are some ghost stories but the book includes plenty that are not Perhaps a reference to “Uncanny” stories would have been far appropriate especially with the inclusion of so many Edgar Allan Poe tales Frankly these are available from so many different sources and are so often reprinted that I would have appreciated of the stories that appear less often The biggest drawback was the Introduction I was less than half way through it when I uestioned whether or not I wanted to read this collection Of course the stories were written by others so suspending my reading wouldn’t have made much sense at all If you haven’t read the Poe tales a very nice sampling is included In addition I was very impressed with THE WILLOWS that recalled some of the best writings of Lovecraft in style; THE SHADOWS ON THE WALL evoking subtle psychological horror within the ghostly appearances described; LAZARUS a truly haunting story of what occurred after his Biblical resurrection; THE BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS which was a special joy because I recalled being very spooked by the completely different film version; AT THE GATE a dog’s eye view of the after life that brought a tear to my eye I feel safe in saying that there wasn’t a “loser” in the batch If you are looking for a brush with the eerie during your late night reading this one should fulfill your needs

Not bad The stories weren't really scary but they were pretty good A few were much too long and I would have preferred less Poe in favor of varied authors
